Dating and Verification

The railway whistle in question was manufactured in 1890 by James Dixon & Sons. This specific model, #5S & 5R, was initially produced in two sizes: 62mm and 85mm. During the late 1890s, additional sizes were introduced. Many of these whistles were utilized by railway companies as guard whistles and were stamped with company abbreviations such as G.E.R, G.W.R, and N.S.R.

This whistle is distinguishable as a James Dixon & Sons creation, rather than a J. Hudson product, due to its rounded domed end fipple, which prevents the pea from escaping.
