During World War I, Austria-Hungary, like many other nations, financed its war efforts by issuing war bonds. Citizens and institutions were encouraged to buy these bonds as a patriotic duty, with the promise that the government would pay them back with interest after the war. However, due to the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918 and the economic instability that followed, many of these bonds became worthless after the war.
